A Fast Word: Remembrance Mantras

Posted on 14 March, 2017

Editor’s note: During the month of ‘Ala’ a handful of writers collaborate to share one work for each day of the Fast.

REMEMBRANCE MANTRAS

I keep forgetting
I keep forgetting
I keep forgetting that fasting
isn’t about food
I keep finding myself
I keep finding myself
I keep finding myself poised
like a sprinter on the blocks
waiting for the sunset to fire.

I keep running
I keep running
I keep running the victory lap and
approaching the adoring crowd
(inspired by my sacrifice
moved to tears by my devotion)
I keep hoping
I keep hoping
I keep hoping that someone
will drape God’s flag over my shoulders.

I wasn’t sure I liked the repetition. But the last lines moved me to tears.
