Many thanks to all who have inquired about Vahid, Issue 3. We received many wonderful submissions and are so happy with how they work together in the forthcoming volume. Very excited to share it with you soon!

To be the first to hear about Vahid when it comes out, you can sign up for the Nineteen Months email newsletter. We’ll send you updates about our newest articles as well as Vahid and other special projects. No spam, and we’ll never share your information with anyone.

At this time, we’d like to open submissions for Vahid: Volume 4. Our theme will be “Bless the Watchman.” As always, we will give preference to poems, short stories, and creative nonfiction that speak to the theme but we will also consider other works. You will find full submission guidelines below. But first, what does it mean to bless the watchman?

In The Seven Valleys, Baha’u’llah tells the story of a lover who is driven to desperation by separation from his beloved. One day the lover leaves his home, and is quickly pursued by a watchman. He flees and scales a garden wall, where he is reunited with his beloved.

“Now if the lover could have looked ahead, he would have blessed the watchman at the start, and prayed on his behalf, and he would have seen that tyranny as justice… those who journey in the garden land of knowledge, because they see the end in the beginning, see peace in war and friendliness in anger.”

So, we invite writers to translate this theme into the written word however they wish, then send us the results of that labor.

Guidelines

We will consider previously published written work. Please indicate on your submission where the piece was originally published.

Our team of volunteers will do our best to reply to all submissions in a timely manner. If you haven’t heard from us in 6 weeks, feel free to follow up.

Submissions are open through December 31, 2017.

Fiction/Creative non-fiction

We consider short fiction and creative non-fiction up to 3,000 words in length. Please send 1 fiction or creative nonfiction piece at a time.

Poetry

We like poems of any length, in either free verse or traditional forms. Please send 1 to 5 poems at a time.

Photographs

Preference will be given to photographs that relate to the theme of the issue. We will consider both photos that can stand alone as their own work of art, or images that can be edited or cropped for the magazine layout. Please submit 1 to 5 high-resolution photographs at a time.

Visual Arts

We accept other visual arts as well, such as paintings and illustrations. Please submit 1 to 5 high-resolution images at a time.

Thanks for all your interest and support! We feel truly honored to be able to read your work and share it with readers from all around the world. Here’s to all the writers, photographers, artists, and readers (and our special designer, Lindsay) who make it happen.

Stay tuned, and feel free to share our call for submissions with any and all of your writer friends.
